The Second Veda -Yajurveda: The Science of Sacred Action
Words from the Chief Editor
After exploring the Ṛgveda as a fountain of hymns and wellness, this issue turns to the Yajurveda, the Veda of sacred action, order, and ritual precision. If Ṛgveda is the poetry of knowledge, the Yajurveda is its application in daily and social life.
Beyond ritual, it contains profound insights into ecology, health, discipline, and collective harmony. Modern science is only now rediscovering what the Yajurveda emphasized long ago: right action performed in balance with nature sustains both individual well-being and social order.

Yajurveda 36.17 – Peace Mantra
‘Shantiḥ Shantiḥ Shantiḥ’ -May there be peace in heaven, peace in space, peace on Earth; peace in waters, herbs, trees, peace in all beings.’
Meaning: Yajurveda emphasizes universal peace as the foundation of wellness -not only inner calm, but harmony across ecosystems and society.
Scientific Parallel: Environmental science shows that planetary health directly impacts human health. Clean air reduces cardiovascular (heart) disease, biodiversity supports resilience, and calm ecosystems lower stress. The mantra’s vision of ‘peace everywhere’ reflects today’s concept of One Health -linking human, animal, and environmental well-being. Read More
Living the Yajurvedic Way
Daily Discipline (Dinacharya): Yajurveda highlights precise timing in rituals. Modern chronobiology confirms that aligning meals, exercise, and sleep with biological clocks improves metabolic health.
Mindful Action: Just as Yajurveda prescribes conscious offerings, practice karma yoga in daily acts -even eating, walking, or speaking with mindfulness reduces stress and improves emotional balance.
Eco-Rituals: Yajurveda connects rituals with nature (offerings to fire, water, herbs). Simple eco-actions -planting a tree, offering water, or seasonal fasting - align with sustainable living.
Interesting Facts about Yajurveda
Second of the Four Vedas: While Ṛgveda is hymns, Yajurveda provides formulas and instructions for performing yajñas (sacred rituals).
Two Traditions: The Shukla (White) and Krishna (Black) Yajurveda differ in arrangement but carry similar wisdom.
Holistic View of Life: Describes food as sacred fuel, fire as purifier, and social cooperation as dharma.
Foundation of Ayurveda: Contains mantras for herbs, healing waters, and balance of mind and body.
Mathematical Precision: The rituals reveal deep knowledge of geometry, acoustics, and environmental cycles -precursors to modern sciences.
Social Wellness: Stresses truth, discipline, sharing, and harmony as collective duties.
Bhagavad Gītā 3.9
Sanskrit (Devanāgarī):
यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः।
तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर॥ ३.९॥
Transliteration (IAST):
yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ |
tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara || 3.9 ||
Meaning:
‘Work must be done as an offering to yajña (sacred purpose); otherwise, it causes bondage in this world. Therefore, O Kaunteya, perform action free from attachment, for the sake of the Supreme.’
Scientific Insight:
The Gītā (3.9) teaches that actions offered in the spirit of yajna-with purpose and detachment-liberate, while selfish actions create stress and bondage. Modern science confirms this: research shows that altruistic acts lower cortisol and inflammation, improve heart-rate variability (HRV), and even extend lifespan.
Neuroscience finds that purposeful work activates reward circuits linked to calm focus, while psychology notes that selfless action creates a ‘flow state’ that enhances performance and resilience. In essence, this shloka anticipates today’s wellness science- true health arises not just from what we do, but from why and how we do it.
Healing Power of Spiritual Sound
A new study shows that listening to chanting or spiritual music slows the heart, improves relaxation, and boosts heart rate variability -a key sign of the body’s natural healing response.
The Yajurveda long ago highlighted the power of rhythm and mantra. Science now confirms that these sounds help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and bring the mind into balance.
Spiritual sound is not just devotional -it is a natural tool for health and inner peace. Read More
